This blog chronicles the SUNY Oswego Theatre Department's Spring 2009 production of Pera Palas. It will follow members of the production team on a research trip to Turkey, the rehearsal process, and the final production experience. We hope to provide both students involved in the show and audience members the pleasures of theatricality mixed with an intellectual process based in both textual and experiential research.

Centered in the Turkish city of Istanbul, Pera Palas stages tensions and misunderstandings between the West and Middle East. Moving fluidly through critical time periods, this play connects the end of the Ottoman Empire with Turkey's joining of NATO in the 1950s, and contemporary Turkish culture, all reflected through the eyes of the harem, culturally mixed relationships, and conflicts between a father and son.
